Mirage of Blaze, written by Kuwabara Mizuna, comprises 40 volumes, seven prequel novels and a host of other side stories and special compilations.

The first novel was published in November 1990 with illustrations by Toujou Kazumi. Since then, subsequent novels of Mirage of Blaze continued to be published over a span of 15 years, with Hamada Shouko as the new artist (who was also responsible for the illustrations in the manga and the artbook Bloody Moon) from Volume 13 onwards. The main series came to its conclusion with the release of the 40th novel in May 2004.

In 2001, Kuwabara Mizuna began writing the prequels detailing the origins of the relationships portrayed in the main series.

The novels have been adapted to anime, manga and numerous drama CD tracks have also been produced, based on selected novels and scenes. In 2014, the Showa prequels were adapted into stage plays.

Mirage of Blaze tells of a young man, Ougi Takaya, who learns that he is Uesugi Kagetora, a kanshousha and the leader of the Meikai Uesugi Army, although he has no recollection of Kagetora's memories. With the arrival of Naoe Nobutsuna, Kagetora's retainer, Takaya is pulled into the world of the spiritual and paranormal, and must find the strength to fulfill his responsibilities as the Uesugi general.

The story eventually leads to the revelation of a complex relationship between Kagetora and his retainer, Naoe, both of them caught in a vicious cycle of love and hate. At the same time that master and servant struggle with their feelings, there are also a myriad of characters that would come to play important roles in the Yami Sengoku as the Uesugi army fights to maintain peace on the human plane of existence by foiling the plans of the different spiritual sects determined to wage war among each other, fueled by old scores and feuds since the Sengoku Jidai in Japan.

Mirage of Blaze is a series steeped in Japanese history, borrowing concepts from Asian legends and Esoteric Buddhism, with powerful relationships that give the story emotional weight.

The novels were adapted into an anime TV series in 2002, covering Volumes 1-3 and 5.5 to 8, and a short OVA series in 2005, covering Volume 9. The anime was produced by Madhouse Studios, the television series directed by Susumu Kudo while the OVA was directed by Fumie Muroi.

A large variety of audio dramas have been released covering key scenes in the novel series. The main seiyuu for Uesugi Kagetora and Naoe Nobutsuna are Seki Toshihiko and Hayami Shou respectively, a combination that was perfected on the release of the third drama CD.

The Showa chapter prequels have been adapted into five stage plays which ran from 2014 to 2018. There were a few changes to the original cast in the last two plays the major ones being the casting for Naoe Nobutsuna and Yasuda Nagahide.
